One of the best compliments we can get from a Mad Rouge client is that they felt inspired. Inspired to try something new or perhaps invent a bold color they would never dare try. With kids, it’s watching their faces light up as they realize they are the boss. They get to “color outside the lines” and create something that is limited only to their imagination. I remember one girl who wanted to craft a blue gloss after consulting a color wheel and mixed just the right colors to find her perfect, unique shade -“Egyptian Blue”! But the absolute best is when someone proclaims, “science is fun!” We are filled with such joy that they discovered the ultimate Mad Rouge secret: There is a science of beauty, and a beauty of science!
Mad Rouge aims to mix up just the right formula to help inspire girls and young women to view science through a different lens and perhaps find a new, empowered voice. Using the Mad Rouge formula of chemistry, beauty, and entertainment, children learn all about the science behind making safe and natural cosmetics. And given there are no beauty standards at Mad Rouge, they also get to discover their own ideas of what beauty means to them. In fact, they are not just consumers, they are artists, authors, and scientists. Discovering how to make their own products and which kinds they feel happiest using. This is an especially empowering concept considering many beauty magazines and ads provide a pre-selected array of color choices or ingredients. Mad Rouge dares to be transparent and empowering to help clients find their originality, learn something new, and craft natural and safe products, all while stimulating their minds!
So how exactly does this work? We put the “lab” in collaboration! Part of our service is to offer fun, hands-on demonstrations engaging girls with applied chemistry concepts and color theory. This is where the science of beauty happens and you get to try your own hand at being a cosmetic chemist. How do you turn a solid into a liquid “gloss” or liquid into solid “lipstick”? When someone proclaims, “there’s no turquoise on the table,” what happens when we add a touch of yellow to blue and a dab of white? How do you lighten or darken the color? How do I change the consistency or make it sparkle? Product formulas are broken into small steps and girls are encouraged to take their own notes and make observations on formulator cards. If someone wanted to recreate their formula, including any happy unexpected outcomes, they would have to know precisely what and how much of the ingredients they used. If they were dissatisfied with the color or consistency, reflecting back on their steps may show her that they used too much or too little of a particular ingredient and can then hypothesize how best to change their formula. By taking safe, natural ingredients and creating unique one of a kind beauty products, each person has an opportunity to formulate something as original as they are. And the best part about being your own cosmetic chemist is getting to bottle and name your custom creation.
When children learn that making makeup is actually science, you see those wheels begin to turn.“You mean I’m doing science right now? It’s so fun!”or “You can do this as a job?” One teacher who participated at a Mad Rouge event commented on her own observations in her classroom that many girls lacked an interest in science. However, after they discovered that makeup was actually chemistry, many were excited and surprised to learn something they used every day was science. Yes, this is an awesome discovery! But this doesn’t just apply to children, as adults alike may discover the science of beauty is fun and may find a new hobby or perhaps even a career. Since the start of Mad Rouge Beauty, Sarah and I have asked ourselves, “Why should cosmetic chemists have all the fun?”
