People often ask how the idea of Mad Rouge came about. After all it’s a unique and interesting concept. It all kind of began with my niece, Stella Rose, my son Remy and his best friend Evan, and a Mad Science party. But let me back up a little…
Every year, around the same time, I start to think about my son’s birthday party, and probably like most parents I start to stress! What kind of party is he going to want? How many friends will be on his invite list? Where will it be? Will it be fun and interesting? And most importantly, how much is it going to cost? When he was younger, these were always easy questions to answer. We would usually have it at a park, with lots of kids running around playing park games, followed by cupcakes, and if we were feeling adventurous, taking swings at a piñata! But as my son got older, the birthday parties got more detailed and the requests became more specific. Suddenly he was at an age where attending a birthday party with live reptiles was not only ‘super cool’, but also an educational learning experience. Then there was the party where he got to build and battle his own smart robot, which was an experience taken straight from the movie, ’Big Hero 6’.
As the size of the parties became smaller and more intimate among close friends, the opportunities to grow and learn something new became bigger while expanding experiential horizons. Suddenly, as a parent, I loved this new idea of sharing a personal interest as an experience with friends while at the same time celebrating a special occasion! After all, as a makeup artist, I had basically been doing this same thing for years! Friends and family would always ask me for tips, product advice or lessons in application, and I was always more than happy to share my knowledge and passion with them! So it was no surprise when I stood watching the ‘Mad Scientist’ at my son’s Mad Science birthday party, mix some basic ingredients and turn it into slime before a group of awe struck kids, that I suddenly had an epiphany of my own. Makeup is science. In fact it’s chemistry! And making a simple lipgloss is as easy as making a cup of slime!
Experimenting with natural homemade beauty products was something I had already been playing around with as a hobby. I had been bringing this activity to my beauty product loving niece, Stella Rose, since she was 6 years old. And eventually over the years more family members joined in to try their hand at making nail polish or eye shadow. It became just as educational as it was social and fun! And with each new product formulated and made with natural ingredients by a group of aspiring ‘chemists’ around a kitchen table, the idea of Mad Rouge started to form and take shape. Watching the excitement and curiosity in their faces was rewarding, however it was the list of questions afterwards about ingredients and the simplicity of making a beauty product that always left me a little baffled. It became more and more clear to me that few people actually think about what ingredients are in their products. Especially young girls with their limited budgets wandering into the drugstore to purchase whatever makeup they can out of the .99 cent bins. But how many people actually stop and think about the science aspect of it when they are buying an eyeshadow or applying their favorite lipstick? Do you ever stop to think why one product feels better on your skin than another? Or why your favorite nail polish has that certain light catching sheen? And more importantly, do you ever actually wonder what’s IN that product? Is it even safe? It was in these questions that I suddenly realized there was a chance not only to learn about what goes into these products, but also to have fun while creating beauty products of your own. Therein laid the opportunity of how to share this with the world.
I needed to figure out the next step. As a mother of a boy, I was sort of out of my element when it came to testing these ideas further. However my son loved science and chemistry, so I knew there was a connection in the two. My son, Remy, and his best friend Evan would turn into mad scientists every time they got together, mixing up any ingredient they could get their hands on. It was always so much fun to watch and be a part of their creative experiments. It was on one of these fun afternoons that I shared the idea of Mad Rouge with Evan’s mom, Jen, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Mad Rouge Beauty was born soon after and Jen and I realized we could fill a need in the ever growing world of experiential events while having fun and learning something completely new. Chemistry, beauty, and entertainment. That’s the Mad Rouge Beauty formula!
